For example, a 6×36 wire rope consists of six strands, with each strand containing approximately 36 wires. Compared with a 6×19 rope, its larger number of smaller wires generally provides greater flexibility and bending-fatigue resistance.

Rotation-resistant and non-rotating ropes are specially designed for applications where controlling torque and rotation is important. They are commonly used on tower cranes, mobile cranes, lifting equipment, and other machinery where load rotation must be minimized.

Wire ropes can also be supplied as bright wire rope or galvanized wire rope. Galvanized wire rope has a zinc coating that provides additional corrosion resistance, making it suitable for outdoor, marine, and humid environments.

What Is the Difference Between a Fiber Core and Steel Core?

The core is an important factor when selecting a wire rope.

A fiber core provides good flexibility and is commonly used where bending performance is a priority. It can also provide a degree of cushioning between the strands.

A steel core, such as an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC), provides greater resistance to crushing and deformation. Steel-core ropes are widely used in cranes, mining equipment, winches, excavators, and other heavy-duty applications where high strength and stability are required.

The appropriate core depends on the working load, drum and sheave configuration, operating temperature, bending frequency, and equipment design.

What Determines Wire Rope Strength?

Wire rope performance is influenced by several factors, including rope diameter, steel grade, construction, core type, lay direction, and manufacturing quality.

Common strength grades include 1770 MPa, 1960 MPa, and 2160 MPa. A higher nominal tensile strength can provide a higher minimum breaking force for a given rope construction and diameter, although rope selection should never be based on strength alone.

Working load limits must be determined according to the application, safety requirements, equipment manufacturer's specifications, and applicable standards.

Where Is Wire Rope Used?
