How to clamp wire rope?

Steps for Installing Wire Rope Clamps

  1. Select the Appropriate Clamp Size
Choose a wire rope clamp that matches the diameter of the wire rope. Using the correct size clamp ensures a secure hold, preventing accidental slippage or loosening during use.

  2. Determine the Loop Length
Decide on the required loop length at the end of the wire rope based on strength and load-bearing requirements. Ensure it is sufficient to create an effective connection.

  3. Install the First Clamp

    • Place the first wire rope clamp at the start of the loop, near the end of the wire rope where the loop begins.
    • Important: Position the “U” bolt over the dead end of the rope (the non-load-bearing end) and the saddle on the live end (the load-bearing part).
    • This setup helps distribute the clamping force evenly and reduces the risk of slippage.
  4. Install Additional Clamps with Recommended Spacing

    • Following the manufacturer’s recommendations, install additional clamps at regular intervals along the length of the rope.
    • A common rule is to space each clamp approximately six rope diameters apart. For instance, if the wire rope is 10 mm in diameter, space each clamp about 60 mm apart.
    • Generally, a minimum of three clamps is used for secure attachment, depending on the rope diameter and load requirements.
  5. Alternately Tighten the Clamp Nuts

    • Begin by hand-tightening each clamp’s nuts in sequence.
    • Then, using a torque wrench, alternately tighten the nuts to the torque specifications provided by the clamp manufacturer. Alternating helps distribute pressure evenly along the rope, avoiding uneven clamping force.
  6. Perform a Load Test

    • After installation, conduct a load test before placing the wire rope into service.
    • Expose the rope to the expected working load, or a simulated load, to check for any slippage or loosening in the clamps.
  7. Re-tighten the Nuts After Testing

    • Following the load test, re-tighten each clamp to ensure all connection points are secure.
    • This step is especially important during the initial use period. After some time in service, it’s advisable to periodically check and re-tighten the clamps for ongoing safety.

Important Considerations

  • Use Multiple Clamps for Added Security: Using more than one clamp significantly increases connection reliability. However, be mindful of installation details to ensure even force distribution.
  • Avoid Incorrect Installation: Positioning the “U” bolt on the live end (load-bearing part) can damage the wire rope and increase the risk of slippage.
  • Follow the Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Spacing, torque, and other requirements can vary by clamp model and brand. Always refer to the specific guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
